5x10 storage units: furniture, mattresses and a usable layout

A nominal 5x10 unit offers 50 square feet in a long, narrow layout. It can be a useful shortlist for bedroom furniture or a modest move, provided your largest items fit the route and leave enough room for the way you will use it.

The advantage and limitation of a narrow room

Five feet across and ten feet deep is a different shape from a wide room of similar area. The depth helps with long bed-frame components or a couch that could not sit comfortably in a 5x5. The narrow width can make it difficult to turn furniture, create an aisle, or put two bulky items side by side.

Extra Space Storage uses bedroom and studio illustrations for this size. Those examples are useful for shortlisting, but they are not a measurement of your possessions. A minimalist bedroom and a studio with a sectional, dining furniture and appliances are very different inventories. Ask for actual room and entrance dimensions rather than relying on the housing label.1 source

Measure an inventory before adding the boxes

A realistic planning list might contain a dismantled bed frame, a mattress, a dresser, two bedside tables, and cartons of clothing and kitchenware. Measure every item in its permitted storage orientation. Remove only parts that can be reassembled reliably, label the hardware, and include mattress bags or moving blankets in the packed dimensions.

Now identify the pieces that cannot support another load. A dresser top is not automatically a shelf, and a fragile bedside table should not carry dense book boxes. The question is not simply whether the total furniture volume is small enough. It is whether you can arrange supported footprints and stable stacks without damaging them or blocking the entrance.

Will a king mattress fit in a 5x10?

The mattress must fit both the room and the manufacturer’s storage requirements. Tempur-Pedic lists a standard king at 76 by 80 inches and a California king at 72 by 84 inches.10 source A nominal five-foot width is 60 inches, so neither example can lie flat across that width without bending. These are reference dimensions, not a substitute for measuring your exact wrapped mattress and foundation.

Ask whether your mattress must lie flat, whether edge storage is permitted, and whether bending or folding is prohibited. Compare that answer with the usable ceiling height, door and hallway. Storing it upright may conflict with its construction or support requirements. If the maker calls for flat support that the 5x10 cannot provide, compare a 10x10 or another suitable layout instead of forcing the mattress into the smaller footprint.

The route matters particularly for a rigid foundation or adjustable base. Measure elevator doors, the lift interior and turns with the packed piece in mind. A flexible mattress squeezing through an opening does not prove that its base will follow or that long-term storage on an edge is suitable.

Draw the front and back before loading

On a 5-by-10-foot plan, test a hypothetical 3-foot-deep storage zone along one long wall and a 2-foot-wide clear strip beside it. This is a scale-planning illustration, not a universal aisle recommendation. If a wrapped dresser is deeper than the proposed zone, redraw the plan rather than letting it quietly consume the walkway.

Put the least-needed rigid pieces toward the rear, with labeled cartons arranged so you can see their numbers from the clear space. Items needed first at your next home should be near the front. Extra Space recommends a walking path, heavier items below lighter ones and a storage map; a narrow unit makes those choices especially important.9 source

Compare 5x5, 5x10 and 10x10 for the same list

A 5x5 is worth testing when you mostly have stackable cartons and only one small furniture piece. A 5x10 adds length without adding width. A 10x10 offers a broader floor plan for furniture and retrieval, which can matter more than simply doubling a nominal volume.

If the 5x10 works only when every carton is inaccessible behind a mattress, decide whether that matches the stay. For a sealed move between homes it may be acceptable; for weekly visits it is frustrating. Two narrow units may separate belongings, but each needs its own lock and may have separate charges, and neither becomes a wider room.

Price and access checks that affect the decision

Compare written quotes for the same dates, climate features and floor access. Do not assume a ground-level drive-up 5x10 and an upstairs indoor 5x10 involve the same moving work. Ask about loading distance, cart availability, door opening, tenant hours and the process if the room proves too small.

Inspect the allocated unit before unloading whenever possible. Look for an unobstructed doorway and an interior shape matching your plan. If the stay may run through different seasons, ask what heating, cooling and humidity management the unit actually receives; those features should be evaluated separately from size.5 source

Questions to settle

Can a 5x10 hold a one-bedroom apartment?

Some inventories may work, but bedroom count is not a fit guarantee. Include living-room furniture, closets, kitchen cartons and appliances in a measured layout; compare a wider unit if nonstackable pieces dominate.

Is a 10x5 the same as a 5x10?

The nominal area is the same, but the entrance may be on a different wall. Confirm the door location and width: a wider opening can change loading and retrieval even when floor area is unchanged.

Can I stand a mattress against the wall?

Follow the mattress manufacturer’s storage guidance. Do not assume long-term edge storage is permitted simply because it frees floor space, and never put heavy boxes against an unsupported mattress.

Is a 5x10 always cheaper than a 10x10?

No price relationship is guaranteed across different locations, availability, promotions and features. Compare full-stay quotes for suitable units, including required extras and moving effort.
